  • A Filipino seafarer who had been critically injured during the September 29 attack on MV Minervagracht in the Gulf of Aden has died, the Department of Migrant Workers confirmed.
  • The DMW, under the direction of President Marcos Jr., has pledged full assistance and benefits to the seafarer’s family, including financial and welfare support.
  • Preliminary reports suggest the Filipino crew were not given the opportunity to refuse passage through the high-risk Gulf of Aden, a right normally afforded under DMW guidelines.

  • Filipino seafarers were cautioned during a seminar about the serious legal risks of engaging in child pornography and drug trafficking, which can lead to deportation or criminal charges.
  • Authorities stressed the importance of abiding by both Philippine and international laws to maintain reputation and avoid endangering one’s career in the maritime sector. 
  • The seminar serves as a reminder that even off-duty conduct is scrutinized, and seafarers must always uphold professionalism, integrity, and vigilance while working abroad.
 
3. 30 Years of National Seafarers Day to honor Filipino mariners - (The Voice Newsweekly - Pampanga News)
  • The 30th National Seafarers Day (NSD) was held on September 28, 2025, under the theme “Marinong Filipino: Ating Karagatan. Ating Kabuhayan. Alagaan!” to honor and recognize the role of Filipino seafarers. 
  • In 2024, there were 504,057 Filipino seafarers deployed on foreign-flagged vessels, with their remittances amounting to US$6,941,085,000, representing around 20% of total OFW dollar remittances.
  • The NSD tradition began in 1996 and was later moved to the last Sunday of September via proclamation, integrating various commemorative activities such as memorials at sea, parades, and recognition programs involving government, private sectors, and families.
