Principal Accountabilities
Orthoptics is the clinical science of ocular motility and related disorders of the eyes. An individual trained as an orthoptist is a specialized medical assistant working under the supervision of an ophthalmologist. Orthoptists form part of the eye care team and generally work closely together with ophthalmologists, optometrists and vision scientists. The services provided by the orthoptist are: 1. Investigate, diagnose and treat defects of binocular vision and abnormalities of eye movement. The work involves seeing patients of
all ages from infants to the elderly. 2. Use visual acuity tests, eye movement tests and visual field testing to diagnose amblyopia, or lazy eye syndrome, strabismus, or squint, and problems with ocular motility. 3. Teach patients eye exercises to help correct vision. 4. Work together with an ophthalmologist or surgeon to assess treatment options. 5. Involved in vision rehabilitation after operations, teaching patients who have had eye muscle adjustment to control eye alignment. 6. Involved in teaching and research activities related to the Orthoptic field. 7. Training of new Orthoptists and Ophthalmology Residents. 8. Assist the ophthalmologist with other professional tasks such as visual field and glaucoma testing. 9. Perform vision screening of children in schools and community health centers.
· Education: Minimum: Diploma in Optometry
· Experience: Minimum: 3 years
· Language Skills: English or Arabic
· Computer Skills: Basic Computer Skills
