The role of UNIX Systems Administrator is the installation , configuration and support of all UNIX operating systems instances at the ministry. The Unix environments at MOI are based on AIX virtualized environments using IBM PSeries servers in addition to the growing Linux instances. Responsibilities The UNIX Systems Administrator (UNIX SA), will be responsible for installing and configuring UNIX operating systems, as required by MOI. This will include preparing the hardware/virtualized environments for new installations and performing required changes to the server configurations as well. Keep the UNIX systems up to date with the latest patch levels and security levels as recommended by the software vendors or by MOI policies. Monitor systems on regular basis and ensure the required service levels of the end users are met. Further, it’ll be the responsibility of the UNIX SA to advice management with acquiring additional resources or hardware. Act proactively to prevent system failures through the monitoring the systems. This is including but not limited to CPU Utilizations, Memory Utilizations, I/O Utilizations and monitoring application and system logs. Manage the disk space utilization and make necessary backups of the log files or delete the unwanted log files or any other file from the temporary file locations to maintain a healthy system. Performance tuning of the operating systems based on the recommendations of either applications vendors or by MOI management. Ensure that the UNIX systems are recoverable from disastrous situations. It is expected to perform system backups or other necessary backups (with the assistance of the Backup Administrators). Performing necessary backups before and after changes will be expected from this role. Coordinate with the project management teams, vendor support teams, backup administrators, storage administrators and applications analysts to troubleshoot system failures and other necessary issues with systems.
