Marine Shipfitter/Fabricator |
Repairs and modification, installation and dismantling various shipboard hulls, bulkheads or decks. The work includes the removal of deteriorated metal from hull, superstructure, etc., on steel, aluminum vessels, or stainless steel structures. Employees cut away deteriorated metal, determine size of replacement section, and tack weld section into place. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Marine Hull Supervisor and is reviewed for quality and compliance to ABS regulations.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES:
- Repair, modify, install and dismantle various shipboard hulls, bulkheads or decks.
- Design and fabricate complex fixtures and jigs.
- Ability to cut, shape, form, roll and erect steel plate/structures
- proficient in the use of plasma, oxyacetylene and air carbon arc cutting equipment for hand torch and tractor type machine burring
- Good housekeeping habits, strict adherence to safety.
- Cuts out, using oxygen-acetylene torch or plasma damaged or deteriorated steel, aluminum, or stainless steel plates, frames, braces, shafts, rudders, etc., measures replacement materials, cuts out replacement parts, and tack welds part into place.
- From data provided on blueprints, cuts out from stock materials, steel parts for the construction of foundations for pumps, engines, tanks, etc.; and tack welds foundations together.
· Performs related duties as required.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATION:
- Working knowledge of the physical properties of a variety of ferrous and non- ferrous metals.
- Working knowledge of the construction of steel ships, dredges, barges, and work boats.
- Working knowledge of ABS regulations for steel vessels.
- Ability to read blueprints and mechanical drawings.
- Five (5) years at shipyards post apprenticeship experience in metal fabrication.
- Completion of Trade school and a minimum of five (5) years of shipyard experience as a shipfitter.
