Incompetent will be responsible for combination of painting, abrasive blasting and hydro-blasting functions. Incompetent will prepare surfaces by removing paint, tar, rust and other surface contaminants from ships, buildings, tanks, hulls etc. apply paint coating systems to preserve marine vessels and associated appendages.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES:
- Clean and perform surface preparation using hand-tools, abrasive material, chemical cleaners and solvents.
- Prepare surfaces by removing paint, tar, rust and other surface contaminants from ships, buildings, tanks, hulls etc., using hand wire brushes, scrapers, various hand cleaning brushes;
- Apply degreasing acids, detergents and other chemical cleaning agents; prepare and smooth surfaces by using sanders, scaling and needle guns, grinders and other pneumatic/electric power tools.
- Handle, mix and prepare organic coatings and solvents, determining appropriate ratios for primer and catalyst formulas.
- Ascertain and adhere to required relative humidity and temperatures for coating applications as applicable.
- Maintain and use respiratory and safety equipment.

Store, handle and dispose of hazardous material and hazardous waste. Comply with all applicable requirements for Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Protection, and Hazardous Material/Hazardous Waste.
Assemble and operate painting and abrasive blasting equipment.
- Mixing, matching, tinting and blending coating materials adding various agents such as retardants, dryers, solvents, thinners to ensure proper color, texture, consistency, hardening and drying.
- Selecting and applying the applicable coating system using spray equipment, brushes and rollers.
- Disassembles, cleans, and lubricates paint gun, regulators, tanks, and hoses.
- Cleans brushes and rollers.
- Inspect completed work for adherence to specified mil thickness using various meters and measuring devices.
- Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATION:
- Knowledge of trade practices.
- Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, instructions, specifications and other related materials.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Graduation from High School and seven (7) years of shipyard related experience in shipyard and marine underwater coatings.
- Ability to set up and operate all tools and equipment required to perform the functions of the job.
- Be proficient in blueprint and specification reading.
- Knowledge of painting and related corrosion control and prevention, and hazardous material/waste handling and disposal.
- Ability to use design sketches, illustrations, and verbal direction under limited supervision.
- Completion of high school and five (5) years experience of shipyard or ship building industry in surface preparation and painting of steel surfaces; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
