A decorative painter reviews a job order, or his painting plan, and gathers the materials he needs; or mixes, heats or melts ingredients by hand or with equipment to make what he needs. He cleans and prepares the surface to remove particles that can interfere with paint adherence, such as old paint or dust, with various tools including solvents and rags, sandpaper, scrapers or steam equipment. He then applies paint with different tools, such as brushes, paint pens or markers, sponges or sprayers. After his work dries, he applies a clear coating, such as lacquer, to protect the work.
Risks and Safety
Decorative painting involves materials containing toxic chemicals that can harm the body. A decorative painter often wears safety goggles, a respirator mask, gloves or painter’s clothing. Additionally, decorative painting involves detailed work and can place strain on muscles if standing for long periods, or engaging in repetitive crouching, stooping or bending. If a decorative painter works on a hard-to-reach surface, such as a ceiling, he might experience strain from extended periods of reaching above his head.
